Questions players ask

Lore Forever is an in-game lore companion for WoW Forever: the story of every zone, quest and NPC around you, narrated as you play. Here's what people ask most.

Is it a website or an app?

It's an add-on: you play with it inside WoW Forever. Open it with the key you pick on first login, the minimap book or /lore. This site is where you download it, get extra narrator voices and make a page about your character.

Does it work in the beta?

Yes. It's built for the WoW Forever beta and tested there every day. It installs into World of Warcraft\_classic_beta_\Interface\AddOns; the Windows installer finds that folder for you.

Does WoW Forever allow add-ons like this?

Yes. Forever loads add-ons from its AddOns folder like any WoW client, and Lore Forever only uses the game's normal add-on interface. It's free, like every add-on has to be, and it's on CurseForge too.

Mac? Linux?

The add-on itself works anywhere the game runs: it's plain add-on code, nothing Windows-only. Only the installer (Setup.exe) is for Windows. On a Mac or Linux, take the Zip and unzip it into _classic_beta_/Interface/AddOns (on a Mac that's /Applications/World of Warcraft/_classic_beta_/Interface/AddOns), or use CurseForge.

Narration plays the same on every system: it's all recordings, so it never needs your system's text-to-speech voices.

Does it work on Classic or Retail?

It's made for WoW Forever only. Lore Forever is built and tested on Forever's own client, and its lore, narration and quest data follow Forever's zones, quests and point in the story. Classic Era and Retail aren't supported, and no version for them is planned. Forever is where we're putting all our time.

When is WoW Forever set? After Warcraft III?

Yes: after Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne, in the first year of World of Warcraft, 25 years after the Dark Portal opened (25 ADP). Forever is its own continuity from there, so Lore Forever tells the story as it stands in that year. Big twists you'd only learn by playing on are marked as spoilers.

Does it undo the retail-era writing in Forever, or work with add-ons that do?

Lore Forever keeps its lore to the first year of WoW (25 ADP). Lore from later expansions is left out of every entry and narration, so what it tells you never jumps ahead of where Forever's story stands. It doesn't change the game's own quest text: it adds its own panel and narration next to it.

It runs alongside other add-ons, including ones that change quest text or voice quests. Lore Forever narrates its own stories and recorded answers. Quest dialogue is off by default, including the play button on the quest window. Skip the optional Quest Dialogue packs if Spoken, Chatty Little NPC or another add-on already speaks your quests.

To use Lore Forever for quest dialogue, install a Quest Dialogue pack from Downloads and turn on Speak quest dialogue in Options. The main download and the female narrator's all-stories zip leave these packs out. /lore autoplay only changes narration as you arrive.

Where does the lore come from? Is it reputable?

From the Warcraft Wiki (under CC BY-SA 4.0) and from Forever's own game text: its quests, books and what its NPCs say. Where they disagree, Forever's own text wins. Sections about later expansions, and side material like the tabletop RPG books, are dropped before anything is written.

How much is AI-written? The entries are drafted with AI from those sources, then checked: a canon check flags anything from after 25 ADP and has it rewritten, and players' reports of a wrong answer (the cross under any answer, or /lore report) get it fixed. They aren't hand-written, and we don't claim they are.

Are the narrators voice actors or text-to-speech?

The included male narrator and optional female narrator are generated voices, not voice actors: synthetic narration rendered from the text, tuned until names and places sound right. The voices other players record and share on Downloads are real people. Want to be one? Record your voice.

How many hours of narration is it?

About 12 hours of lore stories per narrator: every zone, capital and dungeon, the bosses, and the places and people in them. Quest dialogue, what quest givers say when you open, work on and turn in a quest, adds about 16 hours as a separate optional pack. The main download includes the male narrator's lore stories; quest dialogue is a separate download and starts off.

Can I choose which voice I hear?

Yes. Install any voices you like from Downloads, then pick in game under Options › AddOns › Lore Forever › Narration voices, or type /lore voice. Put them in your order: a voice that hasn't recorded a story hands it to the next one.

Does the journey track me or send my data anywhere?

Your journey stays on your own PC, for you alone. It's saved in the game's saved-variables file for Lore Forever: World of Warcraft\_classic_beta_\WTF\Account\<account>\SavedVariables\LoreForever.lua. WoW doesn't let add-ons reach the internet, so Lore Forever can't send it anywhere, and your journey never includes other players' names.

It leaves your PC only if you choose to share it. To make a profile, open Journey (/lore journey), click Copy my journey record and paste it on your account page. Your profile stays private until you make it public, and you can delete it any time. The optional companion app sends your journey only if you connect it to your profile or set up its live answers. Privacy says what the site keeps.

Does journey tracking cost CPU, memory or disk? How big is a year of play?

Hardly any. It's event-driven: when the game tells the add-on something happened (you enter a new place, turn in a quest, earn XP from a kill, loot something rare, level up), it writes a quick note, well under a millisecond of work. Nothing runs every frame. Between events, a light timer checks where you are every few seconds for your map trail and step count.

On disk, an hour of play adds about 5–10 KB to Lore Forever's saved file. The journey keeps its newest 3,600 moments and the map trail of your last 5 sessions, so it stops growing after roughly 100 hours of play: a year of play is still under 1 MB per character. A full journey takes about 2 MB of memory in game. Everything else Lore Forever saves (your recent questions and chats, and the game text it keeps so you can share it) is capped too, so the whole file stays at a few MB. The game writes it to disk only when you log out or /reload.

Why is there a companion app? Can't it all work in game?

The add-on works fully in game on its own: the lore, the narration and your journey need no app.

WoW doesn't let add-ons reach the internet, so the add-on can only tell what it brought with it. Willo, Lore Forever's companion app for Windows, adds live answers to questions the add-on doesn't cover yet, can talk with you out loud, and keeps your profile up to date after /reload or logout. It's a separate download at loreforeverwow.com/willo, and you sign in with your Lore Forever account to wake her.

Does the companion read my screen? Only if you turn on Live game info, in the add-on's Options and in the companion's Settings. Then, while you hold Willo's talk key to ask or the Lore Forever window is open, the add-on shows a tiny block of colored squares in the top-left corner (where you are, your target, your tracked quest), and the companion on your PC reads just that block several times a second, so it knows what's going on without a /reload. It isn't a hack: it never reads anything else on your screen or the game's memory, never presses keys or clicks in the game, and sends nothing online. Untick it in either place to turn it off.

Can I talk to the characters I target?

Yes, with Willo. Your talk key always reaches Willo, even with someone targeted, and she can tell you who they are. To talk to the one you're targeting instead, open Willo's Settings, pick a key under "Ask who you're targeting" in Talk with Willo, then type /reload in game. Hold that key and ask: they answer you themselves. With no one targeted, Willo answers. She sees who you're targeting through Live game info, so it needs to be on.

Where can I leave feedback?

On the feedback page (Community › Send feedback, Request a feature or Report a bug), or chat with us on Discord. Spot a wrong answer in game? Click the cross under it, or type /lore report.

Something else? Ask on Discord or send us a note.
